The  1926 general strike in the United Kingdom  was a  general strike  that lasted nine days, from 4 to 12 May 1926. [1]  It was called by the  General Council of the Trades Union Congress  (TUC) in an unsuccessful attempt to force the  British government  to act to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for 1.2 million locked-out  coal miners . Some 1.7 million workers went out, especially in transport and  heavy industry . The government was well prepared, and enlisted middle class volunteers to maintain essential services. There was little violence and the TUC gave up in defeat.

The  Corn Laws  were  tariffs  and other  trade restrictions  on imported food and  corn  enforced in the  United Kingdom  between 1815 and 1846. The word  corn  in  British English  denotes all cereal grains, including  wheat ,  oats  and  barley . They were designed to keep corn prices high to favour domestic producers, and represented British  mercantilism . [a]  The Corn Laws blocked the import of cheap corn, initially by simply forbidding importation below a set price, and later by imposing steep import duties, making it too expensive to import it from abroad, even when food supplies were short. The House of Commons passed the corn law bill on March 10, 1815, the House of Lords on March 20th and the bill received Royal assent on March 23, 1815.

Octavia Hill  (3 December 1838 – 13 August 1912 [1] ) was an English  social reformer , whose main concern was the welfare of the inhabitants of cities, especially London, in the second half of the nineteenth century. Born into a family of radical thinkers and reformers with a strong commitment to alleviating poverty, she herself grew up in straitened circumstances owing to the financial failure of her father's businesses. With no formal schooling, she worked from the age of 14 for the welfare of working people.  

Dame Zandra Lindsey Rhodes ,  DBE ,  RDI  (born 19 September 1940), is an English fashion and textile designer. Her early education in fashion set the foundation for a career in the industry creating textile prints. Rhodes has designed garments for  Diana, Princess of Wales  and numerous celebrities such as rock stars  Freddie Mercury  and  Marc Bolan . She has also designed textiles for interiors, featuring her prints on furniture and homewares. In 2003 Rhodes founded  the Fashion and Textile Museum  in London.

Ada Salter  ( née   Brown ; 20 July 1866 – 4 December 1942) was an English social reformer, environmentalist, pacifist and  Quaker , President of the  Women's Labour League  and President of the National Gardens Guild. She was one of the first women councillors in London, the first woman mayor in London and the first Labour woman mayor in the British Isles.
